Greetings From KS·CPOST Chairman John Carmichael:
Welcome to the KS·CPOST website, and thank you for your interest in the activities of the Commission. The Commission consists of ten law enforcement officers, one prosecutor and one member of the public who also serves as Chairperson. The Commission performs two equally important responsibilities. First, the Commission is charged with the responsibility of approving the qualifications and standards promulgated by the Director of Police Training for use at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, along with the seven other law enforcement training academies throughout the state. Our second responsibility is to certify all state law enforcement officers in Kansas.
Towards these ends the Commission employs an Executive Director and staff that are responsible for the administration of the Commission, maintenance of the Central Registry for certified law enforcement officers, and as an independent law enforcement agency, the responsibility of investigating alleged violations of the officer certification statutes. The Commission also conducts hearings concerning matters related to officer certification and as necessary imposes appropriate sanctions, including when required decertification of law enforcement officers. The Commissioners maintain close contact with the Director of Police Training and his staff, as well as law enforcement officers and officials from throughout the state, so as to fulfill their responsibilities with respect to law enforcement training.
As Chairperson of the Commission I have the opportunity to attend law enforcement conferences, officer training and other events throughout the state. I am pleased to report that Kansas law enforcement officers are men and women of the highest integrity. Their training is exemplary. They are dedicated, professional peace officers of which all Kansas can be justifiably proud. The State of Kansas, County Sheriffs, Municipal Police Departments and Railroad and Tribal Police Departments employ over 7,500 full time law enforcement officers in our state. KS·CPOST remains dedicated to the goal of providing these officers with the highest quality training possible and insuring the officers certified in our state fulfill the necessary qualifications for law enforcement certification required by Kansas law.
Respectfully,
John Carmichael
Chairperson

A Message from KS·CPOST Interim Executive Director Gary Steed:
Welcome to the website of the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training. I am honored to serve as the Interim Director. I have served as a deputy sheriff and as a law enforcement administrator. I have also served as an investigator and commissioner for KSCPOST. I believe that my unique background in these various roles will help me to understand and work with the more than 400 agency heads and approximately 8,000 law enforcement officers to meet the statutory obligations of the Commission as the regulatory agency for Kansas law enforcement. As the Interim Director, I am committed to the Commission's mission of providing the citizens of Kansas with qualified, trained, ethical, competent, and professional peace officers. I am also committed to adopting and enforcing professional standards for certification of peace officers in a manner consistent with the law, while being considerate of the community and uncompromising on basic values and ethics.
Sincerely,
Gary E Steed
